Sleep training - day 6Saturday, March 30, 2002

Since day 2. Kitten was able to sleep by herself without the comfort of breast milk while waking up at night. So, our goal now is to help her sleep longer at night. Normally, she would wake up 30 minutes after going to bed, but tonight, she fell asleep around 9:20 and is still sleep now. I think this is a pretty good progress.
Another thing worth mention is that this afternoon, Kitten crawl to the bed and join me while she felt like sleeping.After a few rolling, she fell asleep by herself.
Gee, my baby is growing up.

Coffee time

It's sunny and bright today. Dada took us to lake front. Unfortunately, it was still freezing out there so we did not stay long. Later we went for coffee. Kitten played the cover of our coffee lids and climb up to our table after dropping the lids to the floor.

Kitten's pal came from Ottawa.We visited a neighbor in the morning, went to Cosmic adventure in the afternoon, and had 2 movies at night. Kittens loved keeping each other company and we parents had a great time.

Sleep Training Day IITuesday, March 26, 2002

As promised, dada stayed with Kitten when she wakes in the night while I was sleeping until 4:30 a.m. Then she was nursed, and I stayed with her till she woke up in the morning.
This evening, she went to bed around 8:30, woke up again at 9:10. This time, I stayed with her till she fell back to sleep because dada was not at home. Fortunately, it only took me 10 minutes to do so.
I am thinking, I really have to help her quit night feeding this time. Seeing her crying so sadly over and over again is really killing me.
Update: Kitten woke up at 11:45. I went in and stayed with her. She fell back asleep in 15 minutes.

Sleep training IV

If I remember correctly, this is the 4th time we are trying to help Kitten to regulate her sleep. Our goal for this trial - 1. no breastfeed to sleep. 2. No sharing bed with mommy. We put Kitten in the crib and started our training around 9 tonight. This time, I stayed in the same room with her. An hour later, our plan soon modified - objective #2 was aborted. (reason? Kitten won't stop crying and dada can't stand it no more.) We returned to our room and Kitten soon fell asleep (only with a few whimpering, she was definitely tired). In order to break her habit of breastfeeding at night, later if she awakes and cries, dada will go to her and calm her to sleep. We'll see how that works.

After 5 month, we returned to the playgroup in Bethel church. This time, Kitten is old enough to join other kids and explore other toys. From now on, we have a place to go on Tuesday morning. :-)

We visited Cosco this morning. Thanks to Joyce's help letting us in using her card and shopping. Kitten had a great time there. We also had the opportunity captured her most famous two looks with our cam.

Kitten doesn't like staying in the car. When we were in Taiwan, Kitten was used to sitting on my lap in the back seat while taking a taxi. Now she's back to her own car seat, which means that she must learn to be tide up in a not so soft and warm but safe place. Recently, , with a toy in her hand, she doesn't cry much during a short trip in the city. However, longer trip is still very very difficult for her to stay calm all the way. This afternoon, she stayed good on 416 and cried all the way back to Kingston on 401. That was approximately 1 hour of crying. With this record, I guess it will be a very bad idea if we travel to New York by car.

I try not to let kitten fall asleep through breastfeeding, but since she got a cold, this plan was aborted again. Fortunately, at least once in a day, she can still manage to fall asleep by herself, and that happens in her first sleep at night.
Earlier this evening, kitten grandma called and remind me that Kitten's feeling of trust and secure is more important. Therefore, I do not need to separate Kitten from me at night if that scares her too much. In addition, making her quit breastfeeding while she's still having a cold is a bit hard for her. So, we'll wait till kitten's fully recovered.

Coming over from TO. We had Vietnamese lunch and Japanese dinner. They also helped Kitten dada prepare for interview and make Kitten happy.

After bath

After taking a bath. We stayed in our room, read board books and kitten had her last exploration of the day.
Around 8:45. We turned off the light and let kitten know that it's time for bed. She started rolling on the bed, finding her best position for falling asleep. Without the help of breast feeding. She fell asleep in 10 minutes.
Later at night, she woke up around 3 times. One were calmed by patting and the other 2 were brought back to sleep by breastfeeding. It was not bad, I think.

We did not go out today because Kitten still has yellowy running nose. Besides, it snowed quite a bit this morning that made me forgot it is mid-March and started missing Taiwan at the moment I looked out from the window. However, the good thing of the day is that Yichi visited us this afternoon. It was really great that we have re-hooked up a nice neighbor.

Kitten food

Kitten had this for about a week and like it much more than cereal. Somehow I had a feeling that I should not stick to infant cereal for such a long time when she started rejecting cereal long ago. The reason is so simple - she was tired of the taste. This bow of pottage contains rice, cream corn, mashed salmon, spinnich and carrot.

Kitten had a rough night. Lots of awakenings and crying. When the morning came, she was too tired that she slept till 10 o'clock. Fortunately, her fever was gone. Although cough and running nose were still there, she had became more energetic. In fact, she was too energetic that she even skipped her morning and afternoon nap and went straight to bed at 8 p.m..

Kitten just started her second nap of the day. Because of fever/pain relifing medicine, Kitten looks happy most of the time during the day although she has cough and yellowy running nose. In addition, her appetite has been effected much, which I am very happy to see. Now it's my time for preparing dinner.

Kitten's fever goes up to 39.6. SO we took her to KGH for further look up. The doctor checked her pause, breath and ear then told us its probably virus attacking. To make her feel better, we gave her Tylonal. This morning her fever remains around high 38 degrees, so I am going out to get some more Tylonals.

Kitten's having a fever. I guess this is probably mainly from my virus - I have had a bad cold for over a week and now kitten was finally attacked. I gaved her a bit Tylenol and she spit most of it out. Now kitten has fall asleep. I hope she can feel better when the fever is controled.

Plan modified. Kitten dada, grandpa and grandma all think it's too much for kitten to take at one time. i.e. leaving kitten in the dark without breastfeeding. Therefore, kitten comes sleep with me again. Only this time, she has to learn to fall asleep by herself.

Dear Pa and Ma,
We are training Jessie to sleep by herself. We put her into her crib, saied goodbye to her and then go out of her room. Every 15 minutes or so, we go into her room and let her know that we're still around then go out again. Her crying is really heartbreaking but I guess that's what we must go through for her own good.

Kitten has lived in Kingston time for 2 days. She usually gets up uarter after seven and goes to bed 15 minutes before 9 o'clock.
With Mary's advice, I decide to start Kitten's sleep training again. My goal is no nursing and less mid-night feeding. I know We'll gonna hear lots of kitten crying again. Actually, her first sleep in the crib was in sitting position. Gee, I hope we can succeed this time. I give myself 2 weeks.

Kitten can recognize a cat on the picture book. When she's flipping her board book, she always smiles and makes really cute sounds when she turns to the page that has a kitty on it. It seems that she remember the cat she saw at my home.

Jet Lag II

We are living in Taiwan time! Recently, Kitten usually sleeps around 1 p.m. until eight or nine (Now she's still sleeping). Then, she will have a nap sometime around early morning and then keep awake until her bed time the next day. I guess we are going to live like for quite a period of time.
