Letter of the day
--
My letter to th editor about my EYC experience was published as letter of the day today. It was originated as a thank you letter to Our Place. Later, I was encouraged to send this letter to the
local paper to share my positive experience there. I am glad that it turns out this way.

Early Years Centre enriches this family

JENYI WU

(Mar 22, 2004)

This is regarding Beth McLay's March 8 Insight page article, Early Years Centres Are Great, But Can We Afford Them? As a constant visitor to the Early Years Centre, I must say that participating in the centre has been a wonderful experience for me and my children.

I like to participate in workshops and support groups in particular. They work like an energizer for my parenting mind. I often leave the centre in delight, knowing that I have learned to understand more about my children, learned a bunch of new ideas and to keep my rational mind going even in difficult situations.

The convenience of meeting other parents with similar issues is another great advantage the centre provides. As a new immigrant to this country, many aspects in life include experiences new to me. Also, since we just settled in Waterloo Region recently, having the access to child care and parenting resources is extremely important to me. In the centre, it is easier to find parents who are going through the same stages as I am.

Both of my children have taken big steps here. My daughter overcomes her separation anxiety with help of loving and caring staff. She also has opportunities to explore her interests in an age-appropriate setting. As to my son, he just grows up here. The child-care staff knows what he likes and his routine. Moreover, I was most impressed by the way I was told about him, his growth, his activities and new discoveries about him. Sometimes it seems as if he has a family here. They are both well-loved and cared for at this place.

At my dinner table, we often discuss new parenting ideas and stories about what happened to the kids in the centre. Visiting the Early Years Centre certainly has a great impact in our life.

Duplo Pals
--

Both Kitten and Tigger likes to play Duplo. Kitten makes things and does pretend play and Tigger does demolition job. They are quite a pair.

Bath tub fun
--
Kitten and Tigger had a bath together and they both liked it a lot. After bath, Kitten dried herself and put on all her clothes as well. "We should let them take a bath together from now on, that would be fun and efficient". Dada commented.

Kitten's new room
--

Finally, I decided to let kitten to sleep by herself. Earlier I was concerned about some upcoming changes (e.g. traveling, moving) and was not sure if I want to put Kitten through this. But now, we were just gonna do it. "You are getting your room now because you are a big girl. Just like at school, you graduated from one room and move on to another. We are going to decorate your room, get you a new bed, and have your favorite books and toys there." I started talking to her about this issue in different ways since this morning. In the afternoon, we put up transportation stickers on the wall together, set up her bed and lighting, and finally, brought in the small stereo that she had since babyhood.

In the evening, Dada playing a lot with her in her new room and we read a story. She was a little bit nervous and tried to put off her bed time. Finally, after having all her ty cats tugged in bed with her, She fell asleep around 10.

I never thought it would come this easy. Although I do miss having Kitten in my room, I am also glad that I can have all my setting return to grown-up's. Hooray for Kitten!!!

Stairs
--

Kitten's subjects of drawing just extend from people to objects. She drew stairs with wheels this afternoon. It surprised me that she can depict the essense of it very well. Just wonder if anyone showed her how to do that at the EYC. In addition to stairs, she also drew a bed with pillows on it.

Basically, with this drawing thing, she can spend a long time on it. Besides, all of her pictures has stories. Therefore, sometimes she just draws and tells stories at the same time. You can tell how she totally enjoys this from her eyes.

The other days Joanne told me that it is quite advanced that Kitten can draw things like this. For me, I am trying to do less modeling because I do not want to influnce her too much and give her pressure. I hope, as long as she likes it, I am glad to seethis becoming something that can make her happy in her life.

Joanne's visit
--
I phoned children's mental health access center late last year when Tigger kept waking up 4 times for weeks. In February, Joanne came and checked on Tigger. Basically, the Tigger's sleeping condition has already improved. Therefore, after discussion, we decided to make plans that can tackle both sleeping and eating issues, hoping that I can have 6hr+ of sleep and Tigger can eat better. This plan will take weeks and Joanne is going to walk through this with me, which I think is really nice to have some support.

Kitten has been really well behaved this time while Joanne and I were talking. Last time, she was all over me most of the time. Therefore, I told Kitten about Joanne's visit since yesterday, and repeated a couple of time today. I also told her what she can do while we are talking and brought out a play dough. So, we had a Kitten playing with her cats, drew on her magic doodle board, and made a play dough cat. Way to go! yeah!

Volunteering in Kitten's room
--
It's a great chance to learn about Kitten and her classmates. My impression is, they do not just play nicely. There are plenty of chance for them to learn about share and resolving dispute (with adult's help). Still, they all are great players. I see more personality traits with 3-year-old children and their way of playing is more complicated and fascinating. Although I have seen Kitten doing similar thing, but I found it really nice watching others play (and play with them) as well. I also got to play with Kitten occasionally, which I think was really great. I think I'd love to come and visit this room more often. I can learn more about my own child and others around the same age and play with them, is that just a good thing?

Tigger's advanced to junior toddler's room!!
--
I was told last Wednesday that it was time for Tigger to move on because things in infant room at the EYC might made him bored now (Besides, he's climbing on baby's rocking chairs).
Luckily, we had a chance to be familiar with the Jr. Toddler's room on Saturday's family playtime. Today, he just protested a bit when I was leaving. Although I did expect someone to get me while I was helping out in Kitten's room, I actually stayed there from beginning to end. As I went picking Tigger up, I was told that he explored about, had a power nap and joined snack and circle time after. What's more, with an apple in his hand and held by Victoria, he can even calmly say bye bye to me as I left for the afternoon workshop. Gee, my boy is really growing up.

My goodness
--
It is really cute hearing Kitten saying so. Not only is she saying this, but she uses it in the right occation. She must have picked this up from the EYC.
