Note: The sketch was drawn on the 12 when I joined Dada for his Japanese conversation class. Actual plasticine work was done on the afternoon of 13th before leaving for London. Jenyi, 2/13/2005 08:12:00 PM
About the material Plasticine is a material that I've been wanting to try ever since I read the books by Barbara Reid. Luckily, I have the chance to try it during the Art class at the teacher's college.
The topic From the very beginning, I had decided that I want to make something for Kitten but I had no topic in my mind. At first, I thought I want to make Kitten's favorite orange cat but the picture I drew did not make any connection to me. Then I thought of the image of reading with my children. This is actually a idea that I had since last summer, at that time, I thought I want to do a sculpture, the kind that you can use to place on a stack of papers. But it's nice to start with a flatten one with pasticine.
The process I drew a quick sketch of the image that I want to create and labeled colors that I want to use later. Then I started from the bottom of the image, which is the bean bag chair. I also opened a webpage about Barbara Reid's work for reference and talked to my friend on Skype. Two hours later, all I have made is the bean bag chair. Now I realized why it would take Reid 2-3 days to create a image. I had the afternoon off and threw in a couple of more hours to finish the whole picture at night.
Boxing the picture The CD case that my teacher suggested at the beginning was too thin to hold the picture. I dragged Dada to Michel's (a craft supply store) to find an appropriate container. Later I learned that it's called a "shadow box" and it's very expensive. Here's a price list of shadow boxes I found from different stores: -- Michael's: $14.5 Home Sense: $5.99 - $7.99 Dollarama: $1.00 -- In terms of quality and price, Home Sense's is the best. But to make this project affordable for everyone, especially at the public school, I think the dollar store offers the best choice. One important thing to note is that I did not bought the bare shadow boxes that were made for craft. Instead, I bought the custom made shadow boxes that has decorations inside already. Therefore, the first thing I have to do is to crack the box open and destroy whatever that is inside of it. Seriously, it was REALLY fun. Jenyi, 2/08/2005 10:47:00 PM
